Our first injury

Savannah’s made it 14 months and 6 days without any injuries (that’s how old she is).  Today we drove out to Spring Hill for a playdate with Savannah’s friend from church, Delaney.  The girls are only a month apart, so they have a lot in common.  They get to play together at the nursery at church, so I knew they would enjoy spending time together just the two of them.  We first went to Applebee’s and enjoyed some yummy lunch. Then we headed back to their house for playtime.  The girls did great together.  There were only a few times that we had to intervene and remind the girls of the value of sharing.  Delaney has definitely mastered walking a bit better than Savannah, but it was fun to see Savannah be challenged by her peer.  It was nearing the end of our time, mostly because naptime was already past due.  Then I heard the thump and simultenously saw my little girl fall towards the table.  I knew that this wasn’t just a little fall, so I quickly scooped her up in my arms.  Then came the cry that I have yet to hear before, and as she began screaming I could see the blood in her mouth.  She had bit her tongue!  The medical part of me immediately kicked in.  I needed to see how bad it was.  Would she need stitches?  Should I throw her in the car and head to the ER? I need to stop the bleeding.  I asked my friend for a cold, wet paper towel.  Then she grabbed her sippy cup and filled it with some ice water.  By the time the ice water arrived, Savannah had calmed down.  I had seen the cut, and it appeared pretty superficial.  Although from the amount of blood that was now all over me and Savannah, you wouldn’t have known it was that small. The bleeding subsided, and the tears dried up.  We headed home, and within minutes she was asleep. The crisis was over!  I then had to call my husband and emotionally vent.  Considering everything, I think we’ve done remarkably well to have made it this long without any injuries.  For our first incident, it was pretty minor and resolved itself quickly. It was bound to happen sometime!

She’s eating!

You’ll be glad to know that Savannah has decided that food is not such a bad thing.  This week she turned a corner, and all of our persistence is paying off.  Yesterday she ate 3 meals, and there was no crying!  My mom remembered what I did to start drinking (because I didn’t take a bottle either), and so she tried it with Savannah.  It worked!  She drinks from a cup!  No sippy cup or straw cup, just a regular kid cup. It’s a little messy, but hopefully that will get better too.  In some ways it’s such a relief, just knowing that if for some reason I wasn’t around, she wouldn’t starve! They say that eventually they get hungry enough, and they will eat, but for a while there I wondered if she really would.  Since she has been exclusively breastfed since she was born, no one else could take care of her for more than 3-4 hours, so now her nana and papa will get some more extended time with her.

9 months

Here is our photographers sneak peek of Savannah’s 9 month pics. She is growing so fast. She started crawling this week. For a couple of weeks she was doing a bit of an army crawl, but just a couple of days ago, she realized she can get where she wants to much easier without rolling around.

In the past week she has learned to clap her hands and give kisses (although neither are consistently by request). However, she does always give her baby doll a kiss when you ask her too. She is definitely recognizing people now. She notices when I’m not in the room, and makes enough noise for me to hear her no matter where I am in the house. She is doing great at sleeping through the night, but she seems to be a bit of a morning person (waking up at 6 am). I’ve tried talking to her about the joys of sleeping in, and how her mommy and daddy really prefer to sleep past 6, but she still likes the 6 o’clock rise and shine time. She loves clicking her tongue, and she gives smiles out to friendly faces a little easier now. My favorite thing she does though is the head tilt, when she is kind of flirting or just meeting someone new, she just tilts her head, as if she’s saying, “Aren’t I too cute?” When she doesn’t like something, she puts her arm on her forehead and cries, it’s a bit dramatic, but incredibly amusing. When she is frustrated (especially when she’s on her tummy and can’t seem to get her way), she puts her head down and cries. The term ‘drama queen’ has come up a few times, but I’m really trying to not label her at such a young age.

Our biggest challenge is definitely the eating. She still won’t eat anything. We have gotten her interested in a few bites of cheese, but that’s about it. Her pediatrician has ran out of suggestions for us, so we will just continue to be persistent, and hope that someday she realizes what fun food can be. Right? I mean, surely she won’t be 5 and still nursing! (Don’t worry, I’m just joking, I wouldn’t let that happen.)

Last week we went back to the doctor, and unfortunately they say that her ears are still not clear. Since she is not having symptoms (no fever, no fussiness, eating and sleeping ok), I decided to continue without antibiotics, and let her body fight it. It’s so hard to believe that she will be turning 1 so soon.

bilateral ear infection…go away!

So our first sickness 2 weeks ago is becoming quite a pest.  Initially, she just had a couple of days of a runny nose, and then she was better for a few days.  Then the runny nose started up again, and I figured it was teething or just a little cold.  After one all-nighter with persistent fever and a not-eating baby, we went to the doctor last Friday to find out that it was a bilateral (both sides) ear infection.

Yesterday the runny nose started up again but this time with a vengeance.  We went back for a check-up today, and her ears don’t look any better.  So now we started up a new antibiotic, and hopefully this one will work!

We also found out that little miss Savannah is anemic.  This doesn’t come as a huge surprise since the girl won’t eat cereal (which is iron-fortified) and her mom (the only source of food she will take right now) just had a miscarriage leaving us both a bit on the iron-depleted side.  Now begins iron supplements for us both and some diet choices of iron-fortified food, hopefully for us both!

Pure joy!
