You’ll be glad to know that Savannah has decided that food is not such a bad thing. This week she turned a corner, and all of our persistence is paying off. Yesterday she ate 3 meals, and there was no crying! My mom remembered what I did to start drinking (because I didn’t take a bottle either), and so she tried it with Savannah. It worked! She drinks from a cup! No sippy cup or straw cup, just a regular kid cup. It’s a little messy, but hopefully that will get better too. In some ways it’s such a relief, just knowing that if for some reason I wasn’t around, she wouldn’t starve! They say that eventually they get hungry enough, and they will eat, but for a while there I wondered if she really would. Since she has been exclusively breastfed since she was born, no one else could take care of her for more than 3-4 hours, so now her nana and papa will get some more extended time with her.

Here is our photographers sneak peek of Savannah’s 9 month pics. She is growing so fast. She started crawling this week. For a couple of weeks she was doing a bit of an army crawl, but just a couple of days ago, she realized she can get where she wants to much easier without rolling around.
In the past week she has learned to clap her hands and give kisses (although neither are consistently by request). However, she does always give her baby doll a kiss when you ask her too. She is definitely recognizing people now. She notices when I’m not in the room, and makes enough noise for me to hear her no matter where I am in the house. She is doing great at sleeping through the night, but she seems to be a bit of a morning person (waking up at 6 am). I’ve tried talking to her about the joys of sleeping in, and how her mommy and daddy really prefer to sleep past 6, but she still likes the 6 o’clock rise and shine time. She loves clicking her tongue, and she gives smiles out to friendly faces a little easier now. My favorite thing she does though is the head tilt, when she is kind of flirting or just meeting someone new, she just tilts her head, as if she’s saying, “Aren’t I too cute?” When she doesn’t like something, she puts her arm on her forehead and cries, it’s a bit dramatic, but incredibly amusing. When she is frustrated (especially when she’s on her tummy and can’t seem to get her way), she puts her head down and cries. The term ‘drama queen’ has come up a few times, but I’m really trying to not label her at such a young age.
Our biggest challenge is definitely the eating. She still won’t eat anything. We have gotten her interested in a few bites of cheese, but that’s about it. Her pediatrician has ran out of suggestions for us, so we will just continue to be persistent, and hope that someday she realizes what fun food can be. Right? I mean, surely she won’t be 5 and still nursing! (Don’t worry, I’m just joking, I wouldn’t let that happen.)
Last week we went back to the doctor, and unfortunately they say that her ears are still not clear. Since she is not having symptoms (no fever, no fussiness, eating and sleeping ok), I decided to continue without antibiotics, and let her body fight it. It’s so hard to believe that she will be turning 1 so soon.
So our first sickness 2 weeks ago is becoming quite a pest. Initially, she just had a couple of days of a runny nose, and then she was better for a few days. Then the runny nose started up again, and I figured it was teething or just a little cold. After one all-nighter with persistent fever and a not-eating baby, we went to the doctor last Friday to find out that it was a bilateral (both sides) ear infection.
Yesterday the runny nose started up again but this time with a vengeance. We went back for a check-up today, and her ears don’t look any better. So now we started up a new antibiotic, and hopefully this one will work!
We also found out that little miss Savannah is anemic. This doesn’t come as a huge surprise since the girl won’t eat cereal (which is iron-fortified) and her mom (the only source of food she will take right now) just had a miscarriage leaving us both a bit on the iron-depleted side. Now begins iron supplements for us both and some diet choices of iron-fortified food, hopefully for us both!
She made it 8 1/2 months without getting sick. Even when both her mom and dad were fighting colds, she managed to stay well, until this morning. It’s just a little cold, but she is pulling on her ear a bit. The nurse side of me says don’t bother with going to the doctor, this too will pass, but the mom in me says just make sure. I think we will wait a bit longer and see if she gets worse or better. It’s just so sad to see her not feeling well. I want so much to make it all better for her.
So we are entering the next phase, the one where you can no longer put your baby in one place and know that when you walk away for a moment she will still be there when you get back. She loves her Einstein playmat, so this morning I placed her under the arches of toys. Within just moments, I hear her cry, and look to find that she had rolled, rolled, rolled, all the way to the entertainment center and rolled right into it-oops! So lesson learned, I’m looking to buy one of those playzones- a few of my friends have them and LOVED them, any other ideas out there that have helped keep baby safe? Thanks for sharing!
So yesterday I sat Savannah on the floor with a few toys before her, and much to my surprise-she stayed there! I stayed close by just in case she lost her balance, and she sat there playing with toys for several minutes without any assistance. Of course, I turned around for one second, and in that moment she arched back and hit her head on the floor. This was a first for her though-sitting unsupported. I’m sure it will take a little while for her to have this mastered, but she will be on the go before I know it.
We had her 6 month pictures done on Friday, and she was such a trooper. She lasted through 3 clothes changes in an hour. For a preview, check out our photographer’s blog Rebekah Pope. I’m not crazy about the first picture, but the other two are adorable. I can’t wait to see the rest of them.
On Thursday, Savannah turned 6 months old! She happened to have her appointment that same day-so here is her latest stats:
Weight 17 pounds 9 ounces (which is in the 70%)
Height 26 inches long (55%)
So no, she did not get the message that she is a preemie. The doctor said that developmentally she is caught up with her real age. Typically with preemies, they don’t expect that for a year or two. Of course we are VERY proud! She loves her entertainer (and mommy loves the time she gets from it!), and is even jumping in it. She is reaching for things, transferring toys from hand to hand, and absolutely enthralled with the world around her. The days of taking naps on-the-go are coming to an end, because if there is something to see, she is not going to miss it! About a week ago she started rice cereal-and is starting to like it. Although, a couple of weeks ago, she weaned herself off bottles and pacifiers. This may seem like a good thing, except now mommy only gets a 3 hour break, maximum! She is not easily amused, but her family works very hard to get a smile. We eventually get smiles and laughs, but we definitely have to use new material frequently. All that to say, she is an absolute joy!
