One of the best gifts we received when Savannah was born was a video monitor. It has given us loads of entertainment, as well as saved many trips upstairs in the middle of the night. Like last night, as we were headed to bed, we turned on the monitor to check on our girl, and we both laughed at what we saw, Savannah sound asleep with her finger in her ear!
I’ve read all the latest about not using bumper pads at all, but I’ve also seen their benefits as I’ve watched my daughter flail around her bed hitting the sides with her head. I’ve also read that it’s best to remove the bumper pads once the child is standing/pulling up, as they can use it for leverage to get out of the crib. Selfishly, I want to keep the bumper pads in-I love the fabric, and I just think it kind of ‘makes’ the crib. Several times lately, I have noticed a new trend, she uses her bumper pad as a pillow! So I have a question to all the moms out there….did you use a bumper pad? Did you remove it at some point? If so, then when? At what point does a child get a real pillow? Just curious to know what other moms are doing out there.

Hi! My name is Kristy and this is my outlet to share thoughts on motherhood, infertility and life as I know it. To give you some insight into me, I've been married for over eight years to

i took off the bumper pads on the long sides and kept them on the short sides… that way the crib is still “pretty” but she doesn’t use them to try to crawl out as much since they’re not on the main sides. but then again, she only goes in her crib to play and sometimes nap. she’s still sleeping in our bed! ah!
LL OUR PADS ARE STILL IN. MC HAS YET TO TRY TO USE THEM TO GET OUT OF BED AN SHE’LL BE 2 NEXT MONTH.
Hi Kristy
I love your blog! Actually we have the exact same issue. Our bumpers were custom made and I love them too much to just get rid of them so soon, but Miles is standing up in the crib now. However part of his bumper has this soft “minky” fabric that whenever he touches it, makes him lay back down and suck his thumb. Its very cute.. So now we are afraid if we take them out he cannot soothe himself without those things! He often ends up sleeping on it as a pillow which is pretty funny. I love my video monitor it is awesome- how many times did I go into the twins room when they were babies because they didnt have those yet! Michael and I both just lay in bed and “spy” on him at night its adorable!
I think you just know the right time to get rid of them, and every baby is different. We are considering removing 1 at a time for say week each that way he might not notice it as much?
josh is 2 and i still have the bumper pads in and he doesn’t have a pillow. he doesn’t like them. and i am not at all worried about him using it to climb out, they collapse ya know?
I took Irelyn’s out when she was standing - didn’t try to get out but was standing on them. I’m taking the pads apart now to use the fabric for curtains in her armoire.
Pillow - I don’t remember - I think I gave her one when we moved to big bed - close to 3.
we still have brody’s bumpers in too. they’re getting pretty smushed though from his standing on them (not trying to climb out, just standing… and jumping), so i’ll probably take them out soon.
w/ the girls, they started to use a pillow when they moved to a big girl bed, which was around 17 m for mackenzie and 20 m for kennedy (b/c they each got kicked out of the crib for a baby). kennedy still doesn’t always use her pillow though (at 2.5+).
We stopped using ours when Ethan started standing up.
