bilateral ear infection…go away!

So our first sickness 2 weeks ago is becoming quite a pest.  Initially, she just had a couple of days of a runny nose, and then she was better for a few days.  Then the runny nose started up again, and I figured it was teething or just a little cold.  After one all-nighter with persistent fever and a not-eating baby, we went to the doctor last Friday to find out that it was a bilateral (both sides) ear infection.

Yesterday the runny nose started up again but this time with a vengeance.  We went back for a check-up today, and her ears don’t look any better.  So now we started up a new antibiotic, and hopefully this one will work!

We also found out that little miss Savannah is anemic.  This doesn’t come as a huge surprise since the girl won’t eat cereal (which is iron-fortified) and her mom (the only source of food she will take right now) just had a miscarriage leaving us both a bit on the iron-depleted side.  Now begins iron supplements for us both and some diet choices of iron-fortified food, hopefully for us both!

pet pe_ve

So I’ve found another pet pe_ve of mine.  If you are going to use cu_se words while writing, then you might as well use all the lett_rs. I typically don’t read a lot of stuff with c_rse words, but when I do read someone’s blog etc. and they have d_cided to use curse words, I just don’t g_t the purpose of leaving _ne letter out.  People know what you are saying, so you mig_t as well just say it.

Babies need sleep!

It’s a well known fact that babies need sleep, but how much? A couple of recent studies have found a correlation that infants who receive less sleep are more likely to have problems with obesity as well as other health problems. In one study, they found that “Among the long sleepers (more than 12 hours), 7 percent were obese at age 3. The short sleepers (less than 12 hours) fared worse. Twelve percent of them became obese 3-year-olds. Adding TV to the picture, 17 percent of those who slept less than 12 hours a day and watched two or more hours of television a day were obese by the time they were 3.”

In another study, they state that inadequate sleep is an “invisible phenomenon that fails to receive attention from primary care providers until it interferes with the child’s behavior, mood, or performance”. Their poll also found that:

• Infants (0-11 months) average 12.7 hours of sleep — experts recommend 14–15 hours
• Toddlers (1-3 yrs) average 11.7 hours —
experts recommend 12–14 hours
• Preschoolers (3-5 yrs) average 10.4 hours —
experts recommend 11–13 hours
• School-agers (1st through 5th grades) average 9.5 hours — experts recommend 10 – 11 hours
• Adolescents and teens average 7.9 hours —
experts recommend 8.5 – 9.25 hours

Having a daily routine of eating and sleeping only helps a child get the amount of sleep they need. It also helps mom know exactly how much sleep their child is getting. The first study also pointed out the recommendation that children shouldn’t watch more than 2 hours of tv a day. It sounds like more parents need to turn the tv off, and put their kids to bed!

Currently Savannah gets 12 hours of sleep just at night, then add her 1-1 1/2 hour morning nap and her 2 hour afternoon nap, I guess we are doing good. She doesn’t really watch tv, but if and when she does, you better believe it won’t be for more than 2 hours a day!

Baby born with 2 faces

I read this article about a baby in India born with 2 faces. I will pause, as I’m sure you have already clicked on the link to see the picture……

I typically don’t post about stuff like this, but I found the differences in culture fascinating. If a child was born in America with 2 faces, it too would be newsworthy, but we would be seeing the story of all the surgeries needed and how the family/child coped with such a disability. In contrast, because of their belief system, the people of India consider her a reincarnated goddess, and are actually visiting her so they can touch her feet. The parents are so accepting of her disability they have even refused a CT scan to determine if her internal organs are normal. Talk about cultural differences…in our society, a parent would be charged with medical negligence if they made such a choice!

Savy’s first sickness

She made it 8 1/2 months without getting sick. Even when both her mom and dad were fighting colds, she managed to stay well, until this morning. It’s just a little cold, but she is pulling on her ear a bit. The nurse side of me says don’t bother with going to the doctor, this too will pass, but the mom in me says just make sure. I think we will wait a bit longer and see if she gets worse or better. It’s just so sad to see her not feeling well. I want so much to make it all better for her.
